It is impossible to turn a modified gene back if it is modified. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) may get more stronger than their relatives in nature, GMOs may drive their relatives out of the ecological system or GMOs may destroy their species. Evey GMOs may merge into the food chain from an unexpected place and they may cause borning of unforseen species. Such a catastrophe may cause a collapse that is more frightening than the Atom Bomb.

Modern science grows so quick. Many new healing experiments are being made but we are continuously meeting new and stronger diseases. All over the world, people are tended to return to the safe, ancient, experienced and long-time-used natural ways of healing. Among these, Hijama is one of the best treatments of all times.

We are living in the technology era. Modern human doesn’t feed himself with his own hand; he doesn’t have the right to heal by himself. Modern human has to use technology. There are not much people who are following the prestigious medical journal but the most of them are using the new treatment experiments published there. We can never be sure about what modern science is doing to our mind and body. For many times, doctor’s advice uncertain, unfinished treatments –especially drugs, which have side effects more than benefits. It seems like this marathon makes the modern human and the public exhausted.

Especially in Western countries, more and more people are looking for harmless, easy, safe, natural and understandable healing methods. The Western public’s tendency affects the developing countries easily. Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine and even Yoga and Reiki are being used for healing in our time by wide range of people.

Eastern Medicine – Western Medicine

There are plenty of ancient medicines in East. Nearly all of them are from ancient knowledge. Ayurveda is based on the sayings of Indian god Brahma; Traditional Chinese Medicine comes from the Taoist teaching. What about Islamic values: Anatolian Folk Medicine, Islamic Medicine, Prophetic Medicine. Aren’t they as valuable as the others?

In spite of growing popularity of Eastern faith-based medicine, Islamic medicine has a healing method which is nearly the best treatment: Hijama

What is Hijama?

It is also known as cupping or bloodletting. Hijama is the bloodletting procedure which is applied to specific points of the body in order to be safe from any illnesses or to protect health.

Al Hijama is an Arabic word meaning ‘sucking’. It comes from the Arabic root ‘Al Hajm’

Although it looks same with other treatments in the Eastern Medicine, it differs practically; It is done in specific time, to specific points which stimulates, cleanse, strengthen the immune system and refreshes the body.

A Short History of Hijama

Hijama therapy has the common principles with the cupping therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Initially horn was used for this procedure. Hijama therapist used to take the air from the horn to create a negative pressure. Bamboo, ceramic and glass cups were also used.

Ancient Egyptians were the first to use Hijama therapy systematically. There are some documents from the ancient times which describes the “moving the foreign metters” away from the body. In the oldest medical text, Ebers Papytus describes the process of Hijama therapy. Hippocrates (BC 460 – 377), the father of modern medicine, wrote about Hijama Therapy as dry and wet cupping in his writings. Galen (AD 131 – 210), the great Greek Doctor, has got a lot of writings about Hijama. Hijama has got 2500 years-old history in Mongolian Medicine. Cecrops, the great king of Attica, is the one who brought Hijama from Egypt to Rome.

Barbers and Hijama
Berber dükkanlarının simgesi olan kırmızı-beyaz şeritli sütunların hacamatla çok yakından bir ilişkisi var.

In 14th century, baerbers were performing Hijama. Even the barber shops are excepted as the cradle of modern surgery. Everyone knows the barber’s pole with the white and red strips. Barbers were using robes to clean after Hijama. After they took the blood, they used to wash and hang the bandages on the staff in front of the shop. The wind would twirl the bandages around the staff so the well-known barber’s pole had appeared. The balls on the pole were symbolizes the basin which was used to collect the blood after they applied the leeches (hirudotherapy)

In 1512, British Parliament decided to regulate the Hijama treatment. It would be only performed by the practitioners who were graduated from Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Hijama in Europe and America

Hijama was very common and well-known in the West in 18th and 19th centuries. Many doctors were performing Hijama to cure many diseases in 1860’s. The people were having Hijama in spring and autumn times in the hospitals in 18th and 19th centuries.
In 1827, Dr Martin carried out a series of experiments on dogs and rabbits. He was a physician living in Paris. He administered strychnine and arsenic under the skin of the animals and then cupped over the wounds. He stated that the dry Hijama doesn’t let poison spread and kill the animal. Once he moves the cups, the animal would die.

Hijama in the West in 20th Century

Many doctors, like Heinrich Stern, were advocate of Hijama in 1915. Surgeon William Mashden, who established the today’s Royal Free and Royal Mashden Hospital in London , employed Hijama therapist until 1830 in his hospitals.

In Turkey and in other Islamic countries, Hijama was very common until the Western medicine predominated. However, it is still used traditionally in many countries. You can see many people performing Hijama and it is getting more popular.

The model market named Sade Pazar (The Simple Bazaar) of Sade Hayat Society is opened by the volunteer members of the society. Bahadır and Seval Cevizci who are the members of the administrative council of society, rule the Sade Pazar Project (SPP - The Simple Bazaar Project).

All products in the market have unimitable and recognisable differences. It’s possible to find a wide range of natural, pure, clean and healthy products and crops; from olive oil to natural washing soda. These products and crops are assembled by the Society members. These matchless things are all in demand.

The member of Administrative Council and the director of SPP Seval Cevizci states:

“There are strict standarts that we are really urgent about. The products should be:

no Genetically Modified

produced in the most natural way

no refined by no means

included no chemicals which are harmful or threatening for human and environment

good and lawful (halal)

bought directly from the grower/manufacturer as much as possible

meet Sade Hayat Standards (SHS) etc.”

Seval says none of the products which doesn’t match the Standards can enter to Sade Pazar. Se also says that, by the means of Standards, many people confuses their products with the Organic Certified products. Bahadir Cevizci, the co-director of SPP says:

“ Yes, many products in Sade Pazar are equivalents of Organic products. Some people mistakes us for the organic shop. But that’s not true at all. We conform SHS when we are choosing the products. When we were determining the rules of Standards, we met many of the institutes which are giving certificate. We saw that many GMO products can have organic certificate. It’s impossible for us to accept. Besides, organic products are unreachably expensive for many people. Sometimes you have to pay a lot just because the product is certificated. But we aim to serve people healthy, natural, pure, good and halal product so cheap that everyone can buy.”

Bahadir Cevizci also says that many certification companies have a list of risky crops. If the crop is not on that list, they don’t make any test about GM and they may give the certificate.

There are not only foods in Sade Pazar. Spices, natural extra virgin olive oil and olive oil soap, the vinegar which is pickled by the Society members in person, pure wool, 100% cotton and 100% silk clothes, grains with no GMO and no chemicals, natural washing soda, borax, soft soap from unburnt oil and other cleaning materials, even natural barleymeal.

“We ascertain almost every product where it is coming from, in which circumstance it is produced etc. We sell no product that we won’t use.

Sade Pazar is a boutique shop. For instance, you can find natural red brass which the farmers almost grow it for their own, in a minimum price. If someone comes and buys all the red brass, It won’t be possible for you to find it for a long time.”

If you send your name, surname, mobile or home number to sadepazar@sadehayat.org, Cevizci says they can inform you about these kind of unique products.

In a near future, Sade Pazar is preparing to serve fresh milk and natural eggs. They are also accepting the orders about these.

“Every caw’s milk will be bottled separately and delivered in the same day. The eggs is from the free chickens. It’s almost impossible to find such things nowadays.”

“The people who are coming from other cities complain about that they can’t find these things in their town. That demand forced us to have a delivery service. We are starting the delivery service this month (in Feb 09).”

as Bahadir states.

You can order the products on sadepazar@sadehayat.org .

One of the most important ‘marketing trick’ is ‘the commercials of illnesses’ in the pharmaceuticals sector. Because commercials of drugs are forbidden in Turkey as well as in many other countries. How can the drug companies trespess the laws?

There are a lot of ways to do it. ’selling the illnesses’ is maybe the most effective and the most employed one among all other ‘marketing tricks’.

As you realized as well, in every newspaper, magazine or television, we see some expert talking about only one illness at the same time for the same time. Then the illness is getting popular and many people start worrying about themselves: Reflux, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, allergy etc.

You will easily meet someone on the street if you go and ask: “Do you have any complain about your stomach?”, the people would probably say: “Yes, I have reflux.” Probably these are the people who have been having reflux treatment for months.

However, 10 - 15 years ago there were different illnesses like gastric ulcer, duodenum wounds, gastrisis. No one would know the name of Reflux, even the doctors. Somehow something happened and suddenly reflux became such popular that all other illnesses like influenza, hepatitis, tuberculous fell into disfavor and unpopular. The Reflux is a new trend.

In fact, Reflux is not the name of an illnesses; it’s just a syndrome. It describes the situation in some people who experience a high acid from their stomach after a meal. If this acidity lasts long, then the esophagus becomes inflamed. If it happens, you can name the situation as an illness.

to be continued…

- Popular illnesses

- Everything starts with scaring

- Second step

- As a conclusion
